PEOPLE SKILLS
Soft skills, people skills or soft skills, call them whatever you want. They’re the single most crucial tools you’ll need as an event organizer. If you read any article, blog or course materials on important capabilities and the ability to communicate with people always comes out in the top position.
Our business is dependent on people, and as manager, you’ll need to ensure that you make the most of all employees. This means being pleasant and accessible, but also committed and unflinching.
You’ll work with staff as well as clients and officials, sponsors, stakeholders suppliers, talent attendees, agents and many other individuals, so interpersonal know-how is essential!
LISTENING SKILLS
Listening skills are a crucial component in people skills, but you need to go beyond just that. Being calm and composed under pressure can help you stay focused and make informed, rational choices and manage conflict effectively and provide solutions to seemingly insurmountable issues and become the leader your team wants to be.
Being calm under pressure does not seem to be a natural thing for some people and that’s fine. It’s one of the situations when it’s fine to ‘fake it until you get it’.
CLIENT-CENTRIC
Being a client-centric company means placing the guests, clients and wedding party attendees or anyone else in the middle of the entire. Being aware of what the event is about and the purpose behind it is a vital capability for any event manager.
TECHNICALLY AWARE
Being aware of the technical aspects is an essential skill that you will gain from. You don’t have to know everything regarding how PA systems work or how broadcast channels are multiplexed for virtual events, however it is helpful to understand the way it operates.
There will be people who manage every detail, however having a general understanding of how different technologies function and the interdependencies between them will make life simpler for all!
HAPPY TO BE HANDS-ON
Being a successful event manager means being aware of the bigger picture and delegating the tasks to the people who are best suited to perform. However, there are times where all hands go to the pumps. When the caterer shuts you down or the waiters do not show up, or other than that.
In those instances, it is helpful to be ready to get your hands dirty and join the group to help deliver the event.
In addition to contributing for the successful event and please guests, but you also earn an appreciation from your colleagues.
Anyone who is willing to get the dirt on their feet, serve tables, wash dishes or anything else is certainly worth a lot of respect!
